2018 Henry Mountains Volunteer Project - Montana

On the southern edge of Montana exists a population of mountain goats that were first surveyed in 2013 by a small group of RMGA volunteers. The newly discovered pocket of goats were found in high numbers. In 2014, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks opened the area to hunting with the issuing of two permits annually. After four hunting seasons, the RMGA will be heading back into HD-361-20 for a summer census.  We need your help! On August 4-5, teams of RMGA volunteers will head into the high-country for a weekend-long mountain goat count. This survey requires capable and experienced backpackers. Mandatory equipment...

Montana – Bridgers 2017 Volunteer Project Recap

Montana – Bridgers 2017 Volunteer Project Recap Our inaugural project in the Bridger mountains was a big success! The previous high was an October fixed-wing flight in 2002 at 74 goats. All participating volunteers should be proud! These findings were greats news after multiple years of arial counts around 40 animals. We would like to send a big thank you to regional biologist, Julie Cunningham, for helping to...

2017 Utah Goat Survey – Mt. Ogden / Snowbasin Ski Resort

Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance – Utah 2017 Volunteer Goat Survey – Mt. Ogden / Snowbasin Ski Resort On July 15, 2017 at approximately 8:05am, I found myself in a conference room located in the Ogden branch of the Utah DNR surrounded by Mountain Goat enthusiasts. Leading the instruction and pre survey meeting was Chad, a DNR Biologist who’s area we were about to enter in search of a pioneering herd of mountain goats. “Some counts give us 10-15, and some give us 25-30 goats on that range” he said highlighting areas of a ridgeline partially leased by Snowbasin Ski Resort....
